In recent years, the overall tourism industry revenue has
been thriving at a rate of 12.9-16.4% per year. Along with it, based on year 2000
statistics, the number of available hotel rooms has increased by 6% in the hospitality
industry, but the occupancy rate has only increased by an average of 2.4% annually
from the prior 55.9% average. Therefore, a surplus number of rooms to travelers
persist.
China had 283,800 established travel accommodations nationwide
by the end of 2004, out of which 9,751 fulfilled star-ranked quality. The average
occupancy rate of these hotels was at 56.14%. This relatively low statistic reflects
the surplus number of hotel rooms available in China. As a result, many lodging
facilities are in the red and have been forced to reorganize or renovate to become
new types of facilities such as retirement homes. Such changes are driving an overall
transformation of the travel industry in China.
Since the 1990s, Shanghai and surrounding areas are economically
developing at a rapid rate, resulting in a dramatic increase in standard of living
and disposable personal income. In turn, residents have increased the frequency
of their leisurely travels. In addition, 2004 was the first year that the rate of
increase in business travels surpassed that of leisure travels and it is a trend
that is forecasted to continue.
According to USA hospitality industry statistics, the hospitality
industry ranks third among all economic sectors. The number of budget and economy
hotels in the United States is approximately 53, 900, representing 70% of the market
share in the hospitality industry. On the other hand, the same genre of budget and
economy hotels only represents less than 10% of the hospitality industry in China.
The ratio between the number of high end, middle range, and budget hotels in China
is 1:11:1.3, which is drastically different than the 1:4:5 ratio typically found
in developed nations. Mr. Sun Shangqing of the Chinese Central Government Economic
Research Center noted at a Chinese tourism department strategic development conference
that the structure of the hospitality industry in China is imbalanced and dramatic
reform and restructuring will need to occur, including development of more affordable,
high quality budget hotels within the RMB 160-300 price range for every day business
and leisure travelers.
