City Chanel - Nanjing

Lies on the south bank of the Yangtze River, Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu Province, is one of the most delightful of Chinese cities. Known as the Capital City of Six or Ten Dynasties in China's history, it has a brilliant cultural heritage. Yuecheng, the first recorded military defense constructed in early 472 B.C., opened the long history of Nanjing. In the following years, the city reached its height of splendor at various times. In 229, Sun Quan, one of the three heroes in China's Three Kingdoms Period (220 - 280), to strengthen his influence in the middle valley of the Yangtze River, moved the capital of his kingdom to Jianye - present Nanjing. From that time on, the city served as the capital for several dynasties in China's history. Like most major cities in China, Nanjing is developing rapidly. Great changes have taken place in the city. Modern highways and railways connect the city with most major cities throughout the country and it is becoming a sparkling metropolis akin to Shanghai and Beijing with skyscrapers, luxury hotels, fashion shopping malls, supermarkets and highly-developed economic zones throughout the city. Transport in the city is very convenient with the new metro service in addition to taxis, public buses, tourist special lines and other means of transport.

Confucius Temple

The Confucius Temple in Nanjing was originally constructed in the year of 1034 in the Song Dynasty. It was a place to worship and consecrate Confucius, the great philosopher and educator of ancient China. It is also known as Fuzimiao in Chinese. A fantastic insight into how ancient Chinese governments choose officials can be gained from visiting the Jiangnan Gongyuan. It is a sight not to be missed. Now, a specialized museum on the imperial civil examination system is built here. Visitors also have the opportunity to take simulated exams and experience the joys and sorrows of the candidates. The area around the temple consists of a series of tourist shops, snack bars, restaurants and tea cafes. They all appear to be in the architectural style of the Ming and Qing style. A variety of snacks encompassing eight of the most famous flavors are available for purchase at here. Everyone's individual tastes are well catered for. They are necessary parts of food culture in Nanjing.

Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum

Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum is one of the biggest imperial tombs in China. It lies in the eastern suburbs of Nanjing City at the southern foot of Zhongshan (Purple) Mountain. Emperor Chengzu, Zhu Yuanzhang, the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and Queen Ma were buried there. At the entrance to the mausoleum, you will see the Dismounting Archway. Not far from the entrance is the Tablet Pavilion called Si Fang Cheng. Here a majestic tablet was erected by order of Emperor Zhu Di, the fourth son of Zhu Yuanzhang, to eulogize his father's merits and virtues. Walking northwesterly across the bridge, you will see the winding 1800-meter long Sacred Way. Its middle section runs east-west and is called Shi Xiang Road. It is lined with several pairs of stone sculptured animals guarding the tomb. Continuing north along the Sacred Way, you will reach the main body of the mausoleum. There you will start from the Golden Water Bridge (Jin Shui Qiao) and arrive at the main gate named Wen Wu Archway. Outside the gate, there is a stone tablet with words carved in six languages notifying visitors of the importance of the mausoleum. Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum is renowned for its unique design, its eminent status, its amazing beauty and its magnificent scale.

Dr. Sun Yat Sen’s Mausoleum

Covering an area of 80,000 square meters (about 20 acres), Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum is located in the Zhong Mountain Scenic Area in the east suburb of Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province. As the mausoleum of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the father of the Republic of China, it is considered the Holy land of Chinese people both home and abroad. The whole Mausoleum Scenic Area represents an alarm bell as seen from the air, symbolizing the noble spirit and heroic efforts of Dr. Sun Yat-sen's devotion to the Chinese people, fight of oppression and wining the independence of China. At the entrance to the mausoleum stands the great marble Paifang (memorial archway) on which is written 'Bo Ai' meaning 'love'. Through Paifang there is a Passway of 480 meters long and 40 meters wide, on both sides of which stand orderly pine and cypresses trees. The whole tomb is a hemispherical in shape, with the marble coffin of Dr. Sun Yat-sen set in the center of the chamber. His white marble statue rests atop the rectangle coffin, under which this historical giant forever sleeps. Around the Mausoleum there are many memorial buildings such as the Zhengqi Pavilion, Open-air Music Hall, Waxwork Home of Democratic Revolution, and the Sun Yat-sen Museum and so on.

Qin Huai River

Qin Huai River, a branch of the great Yangtze River, is 110 kilometers in length and covers a drainage area of 2,631 square kilometers. There are many famous sites of interest along the banks of the Qin Huai River, including Confucius Temple, Zhanyuan Garden, Zhonghua Gate, and the sights along the Taoye Ferry ride to Zhenhuai Bridge. The Qin Huai is divided into inner and outer rivers. The most frequented place along the inner river is the Confucius Temple. In June 2005, the area was designated by the government as a new tourist route, because it encompasses views of Nanjing City, a city wall from the Ming Dynasty, and the Jiangsu Nanjing TV Tower, etc. While floating on one of the traditional, recently modernized, painted boats of the region, visitors will have the opportunity to fully appreciate the beautiful sights of the Qin Huai River.

Linggu Temple

One of Nanjing’s famous scenic spots, Linggu Temple, which claims to be 'the best Buddhist temple in the world', is situated to the east of Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum. It was built in the Liang Dynasty (502-557). The temple is surrounded by aged dark green trees. The sweet fragrance of flowers pervades, and the sound of the bell is melodious. The forest and springs around add vitality and wild pleasure to the temple. The temple contains the Xuanzang Memorial Hall, which is built in memory of a famous monk in the Tang Dynasty (618-907). There are also several other sights such as Non-beam Hall, Linggu Pagoda and Songfeng Pavilion. The vegetarian diet in the temple is renowned for over 600 years. The ingredients of the dishes are chosen very carefully; the cooking is very meticulous; the appearance of the food is also very nice. Shensong House, the famous vegetarian restaurant in the temple, lies to the east of Songlin Pavilion. To the east of Shensong House, a spring runs under a bridge, and to the west, the sound of the bell emanates from the ancient temple. Dining here can bring you both the wonderful taste of the food and an enjoyment of natural beauty.

Memorial Hall for the Victims of the Nanjing Massacre

An outrageous and well-prepared war of aggression was started by Japan on September 13, 1931. Receiving no resistance from the government of the Republic of China, the troops of the Japanese aggressor occupied the three provinces of northeast China within a period of five months. Marching southwards, they launched all-out offensives on Shanghai and Nanjing, the seat of government, thus starting a nightmarish holocaust that transformed the paradise into a hell on earth. On Dec 13, 1937, the Japanese army occupied Nanjing and during the following six weeks bore witness to the inhumane disgrace and bloody massacre exerted on the city. No less than 300,000 innocent civilians and unarmed Chinese soldiers were brutally slaughtered in mass and individual beheadings, burying alive, burning, and killing races. The outdoor exhibits all vividly represent grief and indignation, life and death. Statues, group sculptures and relief carvings stand solemnly among green pines and cypresses, together with the monument upon which is engraved the dates of the tragic events '1937.12.13 - 1938.1' while two marble walls are engraved with the name of the hall and ' 300,000 Victims '. The remaining bones of victims in the massacre, which were excavated from Jiangdongmen in 1985, are exhibited in a coffin-shaped display hall.

Mount Qixia

Mount Qixia, also known as Sheshan Mountain or Dongshan Mountain, lies about 22 km northeast of Nanjing City. The mountain consists of three peaks-Dragon Peak, Tiger Peak and Flying Phoenix Peak (the main peak). The natural landscape here is really enthralling with its flame colored maple trees, strange stones, luxuriant forests and clear springs. However, the most impressive spots on the mountain are the many widely scattered cultural relics, especially Qixia Temple, Sarira Pagoda and Thousand Buddhas Cliff. Qixia Mountain is revered as the first mountain in Jinling (present-day Nanjing). Qixia Temple was originally the house of a famous monk and later donated. Sarira Pagoda is southeast of Qixia temple, built of white stone it is a five story octagonal construction. The exterior walls are decorated with vivid reliefs. The Thousand Buddhas Cliff is at the southeast foot of the main peak, and comprises 294 shrines and 515 statues of Buddhas - hence the name. You can sample the vegetarian noodles that are served in Qixia Temple. A specialty, they really do taste different with fragrant mushroom, suji, and other vegetables. The best time to visit Mount Qixia is in late autumn when the maple leaves have turned crimson. We wish you a good time when visiting the mountain.

Surrounding it are Circumvallation, Mt. Jiuhua and Jiming Temple. There are five isles in the lake.: Huan Isle, Ying Isle, Liang Isle, Cui Isle and Ling Isle. When you are on the Huan Isle, you can see that the leaves of willows wave gently with the wind and feel the mild wind from the lake that blows tenderly on your face. The Ying Isle is famous for its cherry blossoms. Liang Isle is the one that was developed earlier than the other four. Annually, the grand traditional exhibition of chrysanthemums is held there. On the Cui Isle, there are dark green pines, emerald green cypresses, tender willows, and light green bamboos.
