City Chanel - Shanghai

With over 20 million people, Shanghai is one of the largest cities in the world and is the largest in China. The province of Shanghai is on the eastern coast of China at the mouth of the Yangtze River. The Treaty of Nanking in 1842 opened the port of Shanghai and established it as a prime location for foreign trade. Originally a fishing and textile town, Shanghai quickly developed into a commercial location and still remains as a city with the world’s fastest growing economy; this is physically evident in the view from the Bund which highlights the Pudong skyline including the Oriental Pearl Tower and many other skyscrapers. The culture of Shanghai is a blend of the traditional and modern, temples juxtaposed with busy shopping streets. Commuting around Shanghai is easy with its bus, subway, train, and taxi systems. Shanghai even holds the first Maglev trains that have a top speed of 431 km/h for quick transportation. Although Shanghai is very much developed, the city’s stated goal is to become a word economic, financial, trading and shipping center by 2010.

The Bund

The Huangpu River is a section of the Yangtze River that divides Shanghai into two sections. The river is around 114 km long, 400 m wide, and 9 m deep. There are free ferries that run from one side of the river to the other and cruises for tourists that run the length of the river for around three hours and 50 USD. The view from the Huangpu River is especially fascinating at night as one side is the brilliant lit skyscrapers of Pudong, a priceless sight, and the other side displays the Bund. Known as Waitan in Mandarin, the Bund has a history as banks and trading houses for countries including Britain, France, U.S., Russia, Germany, Japan, The Netherlands, and Belgium. At the end of the 19th century, the Bund became a major financial hub. By the 1940s, the Bund held the four major banks of the Republic of China. With communist influence in the 1950s, most of the commercial center was traded into clubs and hotels but returned to its original use in the 1970s and 80s. Now it remains as a mix of the two boasting important financial buildings and ritzy bars and lounges.

Yuyuan Garden

Yuyuan Garden is believed to have built during the Ming dynasty, more than 400 years ago. The literal translation of the name is “Happy Garden” and this is true looking at the exquisite layout, beautiful scenery, and the artistic style of the garden architecture. Located in Shanghai’s old city, just a couple blocks south of the Bund, the inner and outer gardens are a sight to see. There is numerous rock and tree garden areas, ponds, dragon-lined walls and numerous doorways and zigzagging bridges separating the various pavilions, all built in the Ming dynasty classical style. Its cultural relics include century-old furniture, calligraphy and paintings of famous artists, clay sculptures and brick carvings, some inscriptions and couplets. One of the highlights of the garden is the Exquisite Jade Rock. The rock is characterized by its wrinkled appearance, slender shape, translucent nature and numerous holes eroded by water. An interesting legend goes that the rock was found some 1000 years ago, and it was originally one of Song Emperor Huizong's private collections before it found its way into Yu Garden. The surrounding bazaar area provides good shopping and haggling opportunities, where traditional Chinese products, gold, and jewels are on sale.

Oriental Pearl TV Tower

The Oriental Pearl TV Tower is located in Pudong Park in Luijiazui, Shanghai. The tower, surrounded by the Yangpu Bridge in the northeast and the Nanpu Bridge in the southwest, creates a picture of 'twin dragons playing with pearls'. The entire scene is a photographic jewel that excites the imagination and attracts thousands of visitors year-round. 468 meters high, the tower is the world's third tallest TV and radio tower. However, even more alluring than its height is the tower's unique architectural design that makes the Oriental Pearl TV Tower one of the most attractive places anywhere. The base of the tower is supported by three seven-meter wide slanting stanchions. Surrounding the eleven steel spheres that are 'strung' vertically through the center of the tower are three nine-meter wide columns. There are three large spheres including the top sphere, known as the space module. Visitors travel up and down the tower in double-decker elevators that can hold up to fifty people at the rate of seven meters per second. Once you reach your destination, you will be amazed at the variety of activities available as the various spheres and columns actually house places of interest, commerce, and recreation.

Shanghai Exhibition Center (SEC)

Established with the approval of Shanghai Municipal People's Government, SEC is an economic entity specializing in offering large-scale conference and exhibition services. With its buildings completed in March 1955, SEC is the first ever site for conference and exhibition after the founding of the People's Republic of China. Over the past four decades or so, SEC has been the venue for quite a number of important political events and foreign affairs, where CCP leaders of the first, second and the third generation arrived to attend meetings and to meet scores of heads of states from foreign countries. SEC is a center for important political, economic, science & technology and cultural activities. Architecturally, SEC is blessed with a unique characteristic. With its magnificent and elegant Russian styles and exquisitely graceful decorations, SEC was awarded in 1989 the title of one of the "Shanghai Ten Best Architectures in the period of 1949-1989". In 1999, it is again ranked among "Shanghai Ten classic Architectures with Gold Medals during the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the PRC".

Jade Buddha Temple

The Jade Buddha Temple is a Buddhist temple in Shanghai, China. It is an active Chan (Zen) Buddhist monastery but the real emphasis is squarely on tourism. What the busloads come for are the temple's two gorgeous white jade Buddhas. The Chamber of Four Heavenly Kings contains a laughing Maitreya, a Wei-to Boddhisattva and the Four Heavenly Kings, who represent favorable circumstance. The chamber is located on the southern-edge, or 'front' of the temple. The Grand Hall, also called the Great Hall, this hall contains many statues, including: Three Golden Buddhas, Gods of the Twenty Heavens, 18 Arhats, and Guanyin, Shen Cai and his 53 teachers. The Jade Buddha Chamber is in the northern section of the temple, on the second floor. A fee of 10 yuan is charged to ascend to it. Some additional Buddhist sculptures are also viewable in the antechamber. The public restaurant is located on level two at the eastern edge of the temple and equipped with its own street entrance. Open daily, it serves a range of noodle dishes for five yuan per bowl, the most popular of which is double mushroom noodles. Other dishes are served at moderate prices.

Shanghai Museum

The scope, depth and quality of its collections, and the striking architecture and use of modern technology make the Shanghai Museum one of the most famous if not the most famous in China. It covers an area of 38,000 square meters, with a scale that surpasses the old museum several-fold. The exterior of the museum utilizes the shape of an ancient bronze ding, specifically a Chen ding, with its rather archaic flavor. The structure and materials of the entire building, however, are an accomplishment of the most modern technology. The Shanghai Museum is mainly a museum for ancient arts. At present it is divided into ten sections. These are: ancient Chinese bronzes, sculpture, ceramics, jades, seals, calligraphy, coin and currency, paintings, Ming and Qing-dynasty furniture, and crafts of China's national minorities. In addition to these ten permanent exhibitions, the museum often holds small-scale exhibitions and also exhibits articles from elsewhere on a short-term basis. The Museum also exhibits its material in museums both within China and abroad. Among the holdings of the Museum many items are superlative works of art and are unique in the entire country. These include in particular the bronzes, calligraphy, paintings, and Ming and Qing furniture.

Jin Mao Tower

With 88 stories reaching a height of 420.5 meters and 290,000 square meter construction area, Jin Mao Tower, which literally means "Gold Luxuriance Building" in Chinese, is a perfect combination of traditional Chinese architectural style and the world's modern architectural technology. The building has 3 main entrances to the lobby, two for the office portion and one for the hotel. Additionally, a 6-story podium at the tower base houses the Hyatt's conference and banquet facilities (first two floors) as well as a shopping mall, restaurants and nightclubs such as the hotel's "Pu-J's" on the third floor. The 3-story basement has a food court, express elevators to the observation deck, and 600 vehicle and 7,500 bicycle parking spaces below. Above, 61 elevators (supplied by Mitsubishi) and 19 escalators carry visitors throughout the building. The lower 50 floors (in the first 4 segments of the tower) are made up of 123,000 m² of Grade A offices, divided into 5 elevator zones (3-6, 7-17, 18-29, 30-40, and 41-50). Office spaces are open-plan (column-free) with a floor-to-floor gross height of 4.0 m, net height 2.7 m. Levels 51 and 52 are mechanical floors, accessible only by service elevators. The tower also has the world’s highest bar which boasts an amazing sight of the other skyscrapers outside especially when lit up at night.

Century Park

The Chinese name is Shi Ji gong yuan. Located in Pudong, the park itself is by far the largest in Shanghai and, being set far enough from Puxi; it's got the cleanest air as well. There's a big lake and a lot of grass space for the kids to play, which is lacking in most other parks. Century Park also sports a separate (and additional fee) children's play area with slides, "play forts," swings, climbing walls and room to run around. As with many other Shanghai parks, boat rentals of various types are available at Century Park. Unlike most other parks, however, Century Park is large enough to provide a nice long boat ride for those so inclined. Electric boat rentals are charged by the hour. The staff at the boat rentals is a fun-loving bunch. Although visitors cannot bring their own bikes to ride along Century Park's several kilometers of groomed walkways, various pedal-powered rentals are available. From standard bicycles, to tandem cycles for up to four people, to pedal "cars" that seat 4, touring the park on wheels is a pleasant alternative that also keeps the kids interested.
